The smartphone market is currently dominated by ARM-powered devices, rather than x86 handsets.
Nevertheless, Intel remains steadfastly determined to eke out a respectable market share in the lucrative mobile space. ”[We don’t] go into markets to be a small player,” Intel CFO Stacy Smith told Bloomberg back in April. “It’s a billion-unit market, so there’s huge opportunity for us.”
Obviously, Santa Clara has quite an uphill climb to deal with when it comes to smartphones, as the ARM-oriented sector is currently dominated by numerous industry heavyweights, such as Nvidia, TI, Qualcomm and Samsung.
But that hasn’t stopped Intel from launching a number of x86-powered smartphones in recent months, including the XOLO X900.
The latest smartphone with Intel inside is ZTE’s Grand X IN which runs Android Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) and hits European streets in early September.
The handset is powered by the Atom Z2460 chip which boasts hyper-threading capabilities. Additional specs include an 8MP rear camera (1080p), 0.3Mpx front camera, FM Radio, a 4.3-inch 16 million color screen (960×540), 1GB RAM and 16GB/4GB of storage which is expandable up to 32GB via a microSD card.
The ZTE Grand X IN also offers support for HSPA+ 21Mbps networks, GPS, WiFi and Bluetooth.
Pricing and carrier information for the Grand X IN have yet to be announced, although as noted above, the phone is slated to roll out across Europe starting next month.
