Universal Studios has released an official (updated) synopsis for its upcoming science fiction adventure.
Oblivion is an interesting take on the classic alien invasion story. In 2015, an extraterrestrial device appears on Earth and begins killing the population, while simultaneously exoforming the landscape in preparation for the arrival of its masters.
Although the device fulfills its mission, the invasion isn’t as successful. So after 30 years of devastation, the device attempts to reverse the damage it caused by terraforming the land. It also repopulates the planet with clones of the few people who survived the original attack – the crew of a starship which was off world at the time.
As a project, it was originally purchased by Disney, and should have been released with an accompanying novel. However, Disney waited too long and the rights eventually got picked up by Universal Studios.
The film stars Tom Cruise and Olga Kurylenko with Morgan Freeman and Andrea Riseborough in supporting roles.
To date we’ve only had the synopsis that Disney had given the film, which now may be inaccurate, but now we have an official synopsis from Universal:
Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete.
Living in and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.
A tie-in novel is under production by Radical Books under the name Horizons (though all the promotional art still says Oblivion). There is no word as to how the book will connect to the film. Oblivion is slated to hit IMAX theaters on April 12th, 2013 and all other theaters a week later.
