Michael Dorn, the actor who played Worf on The Next Generation, has been keeping himself busy by pitching a new Star Trek film.
The proposed low-budget movie follows Dorn as he commands his own Federation ship. It is described as having a ‘darker’ and ‘edgier’ atmosphere compared to previous Next Generation films. It would not, however, be part of the new continuity created by the 2009 JJ Abrams reboot.
“[Worf] is out there in the front lines basically chasing terrorists,” Dorn told Trek Movie.
“I think we will have some of our Star Trek people in it, but mostly new characters. It will be interwoven into the fabric of Star Trek. And also what are we’re going through right now.”
Dorn is writing the script for the film himself, and claims it will not be confusing to viewers who came on board with J.J. Abrams, the man who currently holds the reigns of the Star Trek franchise.
Judging by the interview – which you can watch here on Trek Movie – it sounds like Dorn’s barely talked to anyone about this project yet, other than a gew conference audience members and some journalists.
As such I wouldn’t get any hopes up about it even arriving at a development stage, much less getting produced. Frankly, I find it highly unlikely that Abrams would want another Trek film out there right now at this very sensitive time in his own project. Indeed, contrary to what Dorn thinks, it’s not just about possible competition with the big-screen, it’s all about brand image, which would almost surely be diluted by any side-projects right now.
