As you’ve probably seen by now, there’s reports everywhere right now about the independent biopic of Steve Jobs, entitled JOBS, complete with pictures of Ashton Kutcher made up like the late Apple visionary.
Right after Jobs passed away last year, Sony immediately signed up the rights to Jobs life, but that certainly won’t stop another filmmaker big, or small, from also making a movie about his life.
Since Sony bought the rights to Jobs’s life story, Aaron Sorkin has been the #1 choice to write the screenplay, but he mulled it over for some time and remained noncommittal as to whether he would jump aboard or not. Now word has officially been released by Sony that Sorkin is indeed going to be writing the screenplay for the life of Jobs.
As Deadline tells us, the movie is based on the Walter Isaacson biography of Jobs, which is still on the best-sellers list, and reportedly is the #1 bestselling hardcover book by a 2 to 1 margin, with 2.2 million copies sold.
Sorkin’s most recent credits are the screenplays for Moneyball and The Social Network. He also wrote A Few Good Men, The American President, Charlie Wilson’s War, and created The West Wing. Plus, Sorkin is working on a Broadway musical of the life of Houdini, starring Hugh Jackman, which will make its debut on the great white way next year.
Sorkin is a great first step in making a biopic of Steve Jobs, and it should be interesting to see who will direct the film, and especially who will be playing Jobs.
As Amy Pascal, the Co-Chairman of Sony, said in a statement, “Steve Jobs’s story is unique: he was one of the most revolutionary and influential men not just of our time but of all time. There is no writer working Hollywood today who is more capable of capturing such an extraordinary life for the screen than Aaron Sorkin; in his hands, we’re confident that the film will be everything that Jobs himself was: captivating, entertaining, and polarizing.”
