Marvel had previously confirmed that a second Captain America film would grace the Marvel Film Universe, the only question was when. Now we know: April 4th, 2014.
We already know that all of the heroes of the quickly upcoming super hero ensemble film will be getting their own post-Avengers films, two of them – Black Widow and Hawkeye – will be embarking on their first solo adventures, while the other four will be sequels, and in the case of one of them – Iron Man – the next film will cap a trilogy.
Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 have already been announced for the 2013 summer and holiday blockbuster windows, respectively, and production has already kicked off for both films.
Personally, I was expecting the next film to be Black Widow or Hawkeye, as they haven’t gotten a film yet, but it seems their stories are further off.
Marvel has also claimed the weekend of May 16th, 2014 for another one of their film, which will mean either one of the two newcomers or The Hulk will be placed there, only a month and a half after the second Captain America film.
We don’t have any real word about the plot, which makes sense, as Marvel likely hasn’t finished writing it yet, but we have this brief, and a bit obvious, synopsis from the studio:
The second installment will pick-up where the highly anticipated Marvel’s The Avengers (May 4, 2012) leaves off, as Steve Rogers continues his affiliation with Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D and struggles to embrace his role in the modern world.
April 4th is an odd date to choose, as it doesn’t fall within one of the typical blockbuster seasons, but perhaps Marvel has confidence that Cap can succeed at any time of year.
The untitled Captain America: The First Avenger sequel has no released production dates, but they’ll have to get started with filming before the end of the year if they want to have a chance to meet their scheduled release date. Hopefully they won’t try to rush the film, something which has ruined franchises in the past.
