Tom Hiddleston plays Loki in the Marvel Film universe. The character was the primary antagonist of this year’s Thor, and we already know that he will play a big part in the upcoming Avengers film.
This week, we learned that he’ll also be returning in the second Thor film.
It’s rumored that Game of Thrones director Brian Kirk will be helming Thor 2, but this hasn’t been confirmed officially.
Hiddleston recently commented on the rumor, saying, “I spoke to Kevin Feige last week on set and he said, ‘Oh no, we haven’t got anyone yet. We’re thinking about people,’ I think [Kirk’s] name is definitely in the hat, but I don’t think anything is solid.”
When asked about shooting for Thor 2, Hiddleston said spring 2012 was the current plan, adding that Thor 2 will be the film that picks up the plot from the end of The Avengers.
Further, he decided to explain more about his character across the films, “In The Avengers he’s really dark and kind of sociopathic, or maybe even psychopathic is the word, in a deluded way. Obviously I haven’t let go of the spiritual damage at the heart of him, it still comes from that lost place, but he’s just incredibly nasty. I think that probably in Thor 2 his previous actions will, he’ll have to take responsibility for what he’s done.
“The great thing about Loki… Is [the] potential in him for greatness and awfulness, for great heroism and great villainy. There are still, even within The Avengers, there are moments where you see within Loki a glimmer of hope and that possibility of redemption.”
According to Hiddleston, that makes Loki fun to play, as he is a character the audience enjoys watching.
“Nobody is black and white, there are shades of grey in all of us. We all have potential for greatness and we all have flaws. I for one am championing the redemption,” he said in reference to the second Thor film. “This isn’t definitely going to happen, but I think there would be nothing more awesome than seeing Loki and Thor fight somebody side by side.”
If nothing else, we can look forward to Hiddleston’s and Hemsworth’s side-by-side performances as Loki and Thor for at least two more films.
The Avengers hit theaters May 4 , 2012. Thor 2 will be released July 25, 2013.
