Futuristic, funky, green powered and recyclable – that’s the Komb house by Karim Rashid, who believes that “design is about the betterment of our lives poetically, aesthetically, experientially, sensorially, and emotionally.”
These beliefs have translated into a unique home concept that considers both the dimensions of modern human life and the life-cycle of building materials.
The Komb House (which comes to us via Designboom) makes use of solar hot water, energy efficient appliances, rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling, LED lighting and raised radiant flooring.
It can be disassembled easily and its wood, metal, and glass materials (as well as its solar panels) can be reused in other applications.
A key feature of the home is its use of repeating reclaimed wood “fins” set at slightly different angles, which give the home a kind of fluid shape while filtering natural daylight and creating some interesting shadows.
Komb house contains a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and a central living space that draws its inspiration from Islamic patios, featuring an oasis with a skylight and a center plunge pool (replenished by filtered rainwater).
A kinetic art sculpture levitates above the pool, rotating to capture wind power while providing green power for the home.
