Apple upgrades TV software with tighter iTunes integration

Apple has released a major update for its TV software. TV 3.0 – which features a redesigned GUI – allows users to easily access iTunes Extras, iTunes LP, Genius mixes and Internet radio.

“The new software for Apple TV [offers] a simpler and faster interface that gives you instant access to your favorite content,” said Apple spokesperson Eddy Cue. “You can now enjoy iTunes Extras and iTunes LP in stunning fullscreen with your Apple TV, as well as listen to Genius Mixes and Internet radio through your home theater system.”

Cue explained that the updated main menu provides fast access to a variety of digital content, including TV shows, music, podcasts, photos and YouTube videos.

In addition, 3.0 supports fullscreen displays of iTunes Extras and iTunes LP. The former offers extra movie content such as deleted scenes and interviews, while the latter provides live performance videos, lyrics, artwork, liner notes, interviews, photos and album credits.

Cue noted that Apple TV owners have “direct access” to a catalog of over 8,000 Hollywood films on iTunes, including over 2,000 in HD video available for rent or purchase. Users can also choose from a selection of 11 million songs, 10,000 music videos and over 50,000 TV episodes.

Apple TV Software 3.0 is available as a free download. The 160GB Apple TV model is currently priced at $230.
