The manufacturer of the runaway top-selling Android phone in the US is working on a tablet device and wants it to be the only true competitor to the iPad.
Motorola hasn’t suggested what it would call the device, but analysts have been speculating that a “Droid Pad” would bring with it very strong brand recognition.
All Motorola will say now is that “any tablet that we deliver is competitive in the marketplace, and I think all of us will make sure that we will only deliver that when that occurs.”
Those comments come from co-CEO Sanjay Jha at an investor meeting this week. He continued, “Hopefully, that’s early next year,” according to the Wall Street Journal.
Lots of Android tablet rumors have popped up since the launch of the iPad. The core idea of using a single mobile platform for both phones and computing devices has been proven to work.
But nothing’s been released yet, with the exception of Dell’s odd Slate, a device with a 5-inch screen that is either a really big phone or a really small computer.
Asus and Samsung have also shown large initiative in bringing out Android tablets, but Motorola’s could be the most significant, if for no other reason that more people own a Motorola Android phone than any other manufacturer.
