One of the biggest drawbacks to many of the Android-powered TV sticks currently on the market is poor Wi-Fi performance.
Remember, once you cram a small TV sticks behind your TV and entertainment center, it can be very difficult for them to actually pull in a Wi-Fi signal, simply because the majority of such devices lack an external antenna. Then again, there are a few PCs-on-a-stick out there featuring an external antenna, including the CX-803 II.
And yes, we’ve also seen a number of DIY projects surface in the last few months with tips on how to create an external Wi-Fi antenna for Android-powered sticks lacking an integrated option.
Fortunately, a new Android (4.2, Jelly Bean) TV stick known as the iMito QX1 recently began making the rounds. The device boasts a quad-core Rockchip RK3188 ARM Cortex-A9 SoC, along with an external Wi-Fi antenna. The quad core chip offers impressive performance, while the external antenna ensures a clear Wi-Fi signal.
Packed inside the device is a four-core Rockchip RK3188 ARM Cortex-A9 processor, paired with 2 GB of RAM and 8 GB of integrated storage. The stick is also equipped with a memory card slot for storage expansion and integrated Bluetooth 2.1, as well as a USB port on one end and a micro USB port. Plus, modders will undoubtedly be pleased that it boasts a built-in recovery button.
The iMeto QX1 is up for pre-order right now for $90. Personally, I like that fact the external antenna on this particular device is actually attached to a cable – allowing you to put it in front of the television or perhaps even a shelf.
