Nvidia’s blazingly fast dual-core Tegra processor will reportedly power LG’s next-gen lineup of Optimus smartphones.
As Roger Cheng of the Wall Street Journal points out, the most notable phone (thus far) to employ Tegra’s architecture was Microsoft’s ill-fated Kin device for hipsters in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood.
“But LG committing to Nvidia gives the graphics-chip maker something to potentially boast about,” explained Cheng.
“Much of the awareness of the faster generation of 1-gigahertz processors for smartphones have focused on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor, found in HTC’s Incredible and Evo, or Samsung’s Hummingbird chip [in] Galaxy S phones.”
Meanwhile, LG VP Chang Ma told the Journal that LG plans to launch 10 additional smartphones, while selling 5 million devices by the end of 2010.
“It also plans to be aggressive with 4G tech [and is expected to debut] a tablet by the fourth quarter under its Optimus line,” wrote Cheng.
“The first tablet, which will run on Android, will set itself apart from the popular Apple iPad by focusing on the ability to create content, rather than consume it.”
