It seems just yesterday we were talking about Google’s mobile operating system boasting about reaching 100,000 apps on the Android Market. Now, according to a new report, there are already more than 200,000.
It comes from AndroidLib.com, which keeps detailed statistics about all things Android. In addition to saying there are now 200,000 Android apps available, the site says that a total of 2.5 billion apps have been downloaded.
It was just a few months ago that people were talking about how poor of a selection the Android Market had. Because of the fragmentation issue, big-name publishers were intimidated by it, leaving it open mainly to small and unknown developers. So even though there were 100,000 apps announced a few months ago, very few of them even stood out at all.
That’s beginning to change in a huge way. Now there are big-name games like Angry Birds on the Android Market, social gaming giant Zynga is focusing on it, and Epic Games has just released a very powerful development tool for the platform.
It’s still behind the iTunes App Store, which carries more than 300,000 apps. But that’s the same milestone we were talking about when Android hit 100,000 apps. So the Android Market is growing at a much faster pace.
And it’s even more impressive when you consider that the iPhone had a couple years head start before Android was released.
In 2010, Android overtook Apple’s operating system as the most popular mobile platform but the iPhone still took the top stories in terms of apps. 2011 may turn the tables as developers start to really look at Android as a serious venture with millions of people willing to spend money.
