It’s been quite a while since Samsung debuted its popular $250 Chromebook, leaving many Chrome OS fans wondering when the company will launch a follow-up.
Sure, Hewlett Packard may have rolled out its own Chromebook just a few months ago, but as Dinsan Francis of Chrome Story points out, the device wasn’t really an upgrade, simply because the processing power remained more or less the same as Samsung’s ARM-based web-centric device.
Fortunately for (Samsung) Chrome fans, it appears as the upgrade wait may be drawing to a close, with Business Korea reporting that Samsung is prepping an upgraded ARM Chromebook for a 2014 launch.
Although the publication omitted an exact date or even a specific quarter for the expected roll out date, it did offer the following basic spec list: $250-$300 price tag, Exynos 5 Octa 5420 ARM-based processor, 16GB or 32GB SSD (storage), 12″(or less) screen, 2560×1600 resolution, 3GB RAM, 7 hour battery life and possibly a USB 3.0 port.
These specs are to be expected, says Francis, who proposed an additional three (wish list) items: a Micro USB charger (similar to the HP Chromebook 11), updated physical design and a touchscreen.
Google’s web-centric Chrome operating system debuted on July 7, 2009, with the first Intel-based Chromebooks shipping on June 15, 2011.
