Apple is reportedly prepping a 4K ultra HD (UHD) television which could debut by the end of 2013.
According to DigiTimes, the device – dubbed the iTV – will supposedly boast a 3,840-by-2,160 pixel display, voice and motion controls and Internet connectivity.
As AppleInsider points out, if the above-mentioned report is true, the iTV would in fact fall under the guidelines of the 4K UHD standard of 2160p, which offers up four times the pixel count of a standard 1080p HDTV.
It will certainly be interesting to see how Apple prices its UHD, as current 4K TVs aren’t exactly cheap, with LG’s weighing in at a cool $19,000, Sony’s at $25,000 and Samsung’s at an extremely hefty $40,000.
Then again, Apple has managed to successfully redefine a number of product categories over the year with its iPod, iMac, iPad and iPhone, so it isn’t exactly far fetched to believe Cupertino can do the same thing in the living with an iTV.
As I noted earlier this month, the 4K price needs to start trending downward, perhaps towards the $10K mark before most people will even consider UHD to be a realistic option.
So here’s to hoping Apple and other like-minded corporations will be lowering the UHD price in the not-too-distant future.
