Dual-screen smartphones are not exactly a new concept, although there aren’t very many, if any, such devices on the mainstream mobile market.
Simply put, the masses have yet to embrace a dual-screen smartphone form factor. Nevertheless, NEC is ready to try its hand in the dual-screen smartphone market with its Medias W which boasts a 4.3-inch display on each side of the device.
Fortunately, the device is hinged, allowing the screens to be neatly positioned side-by-side. As you may recall, the dual-screen phone was first spied as a prototype device at last year’s Mobile World Congress.
One of the most interesting features of the Medias W? You can surf the web while checking e-mail using the dual screens – or watch a video with a combined resolution of 1098 x 960.
Granted with any content shared across both screens, you are definitely going have to deal with the bezel between the screens, which in this case, appears to be approximately a quarter of an inch thick. Individually, the 4.3-inch screens are set at a resolution of 540 x 960.
Additional specs? Android 4.1(Jelly Bean), a dual-core Snapdragon MSM8960 processor, a 2100 mAh battery, Wi-Fi and and 8.1-megapixel rear camera (sans front camera).
As noted above, dual-screen devices haven’t been popular with consumers thus far, so odds are this won’t prove to be an impressively runaway device either, but we look forward to being surprised.
Pricing is unknown at this time, although the phone is expected to ship in Japan this April.
