After numerous delays and technical problems, the Nexus S 4G is finally getting the new Android update.
Google and Sprint have confirmed that the latest version of the mobile operating system is being pushed to the device, starting last night and going through the next few weeks, with random batches of phones getting update notifications at scattered intervals during that time frame.
Users can check if their phone is eligible for an upgrade by going to the “About Phone” section in the Settings menu. Eventually, a notification window will automatically pop up to tell users that the update is ready.
When the Nexus S ICS update was first being pushed through last December, Google had to quickly yank it after numerous reports of users whose phones starting freezing and crashing.
But then it fixed the bugs and starting rolling out updates yet again, but only to those with 3G versions of the Nexus S. Those with the Nexus S 4G were left behind.
The update was leaked earlier this week, and now it is being made officially available.
Around 3% of all active Android devices are running version 4.0 or later, while manufacturers are forced to be conservative about when they expect to get their devices updated.
Several other manufacturers have pledged support for the new update, and a bunch of phones currently running an older version of Android will be eligible to upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich beginning in the coming months.
