To side with Sony in this increasingly aggressive tablet market just got a little less expensive.
The company has reduced the retail price of all Tablet S models by $100. The device is available in 16 GB and 32 GB capacities which had been priced at $500 and $600, respectively.
However, as every other tablet manufacturer has come to realize, pricing a tablet at the same levels as the iPad means sales will be dismal.
The Tablet S, powered by Android, sports a 9.4-inch display and an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor. The device also boasts infrared functionality to allow it to act as a remote control for other devices from Sony or other manufacturers.
The Tablet S is complementary to Sony’s Tablet P line, both of which were confirmed by Sony to be eligible for upgrades to Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich.
But perhaps the biggest competitive advantage of Sony’s tablets are the promise of future compatibility with Playstation content. The eventual goal is to introduce Playstation Suite software to Sony’s “Playstation Certified” tablets. Playstation Suite will be available on smartphones, tablets, and the upcoming Playstation Vita handheld, allowing on-the-go gamers to connect in a wide-reaching mobile network.
So far, though, Sony is not a big name in the tablet war. The company needs to start a more aggressive marketing campaign to really get the word out.
