If Thor 2 is going to stay on track for its post Avengers release, the project will need a director ASAP.
It’s not surprising then to hear Marvel Studios has made its pick, choosing Patty Jenkins, who recently directed the Charlize Theron flick, Monster, a few years back.
The latest rumor originates from a Deadline article which does not name its source.
If true, Jenkins makes for a surprising choice. Her film directing resume is not very long, and includes no superhero films, or other productions of the ilk.
Of course, no matter who they choose, it will be difficult to live up to the Kenneth Branagh’s direction of the first film.
In addition to this rumor, we’ve got some plot details from the studio. Kevin Feige, the President of Marvel Film Studios has hinted that Thor 2 might not take place in Midgard or Asgard.
“[The new film] take Thor literally to other worlds,” says Feige.
“It will primarily be the journey of that character, of he and Jane Foster and how the new dynamic with his father is working out, as well as what are the broader stakes for The Nine Worlds.”
Seeing that Jane Foster and Odin will both play major part in this film gives me hope that the roles will be reprised by their original actors, Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins, respectively, although no announcement has yet been made to this effect.
However it plays out, it will be interesting to see a representation of the other worlds in the Thor canon.
Production on Thor 2 will likely begin soon after a director to helm the project has been officially confirmed. The release date has already been set forJuly 26, 2013.
