Breaking up is hard to do, but the White Stripes had to come to an end eventually. After 13 years of countless albums, tours, and music-making, the band called it quits, announcing the news via their website on Wednesday. The release on the band’s site does not cite any ill will between Jack and Meg, and assures fans that both musicians are in good health. According to the statement, the Stripes are no more because the duo wants to “preserve what is beautiful and special” about their music, among other reasons. After a thank you to their fans, the White Stripes are moving along to other projects. A second break up announcement this week: Monotonix. While on stage at the Echoplex in Los Angeles, Monotonix made a surprising announcement, revealing that this current tour would be their last. The band’s lead singer Ami Shalev said that they were calling it quits as the result of needing to be with their families. Monotix’s most recent album, Not Yet, just came out on January 25th.
New music this week includes Fleet Foxes and Architecture in Helsinki, who both announced new albums. After a long wait, Fleet Foxes is releasing their album, Helplessness Blues, on May 3rd via Sub Pop/Bella Union. It’s been four years since Architecture in Helsinki put out their last album, but the band returns with its fourth album Moment Bends also out May 3rd via Cooperative Music USA/Downtown Records.
Ultra Music Festival is kicking off the year right, set to take place March 25, 26, & 27 at Bicentennial Park in Miami, FL with headliners including Tiësto, deadmau5, The Chemical Brothers, David Guetta, Carl Cox and Empire of the Sun, Duran Duran, Underworld, Armin van Buuren, Moby, Kaskade, Erick Morillo ,will.i.am, Sasha (Vortek live), The Disco Biscuits, Avicii, Fedde Le Grand, ATB, The Glitch Mob, Scream! & Benga, and more. Architecture in Helsinki Return With New Album, Tour: It’s been four years since Architecture in Helsinki put out their last album, but that changes this year when the band returns with its fourth album Moment Bends, out May 3 on Cooperative Music USA/Downtown Records. The band will also be touring the world in support of the new album, with a US tour in June.
