A District 9 assault rifle has been spotted in the wilds of Comic-Con. The $500 replica – manufactured by Weta – features battle worn scratches and green alien gunk oozing from its enigmatic couplings.
“This [is the] first [weapon] presented to Wikus van der Merwe by the MNU scientists at the underground shooting range at MNU headquarters,” explained Weta designer Greg Broadmore.
“The tubes down the side each discharge an explosive burst of gas one after the other down the length of the barrel behind the projectile – a linear accelerator gun, like a rail gun but without the magnets. Of course it would fire these all rapidly to get a high rate of fire.”
The shockingly realistic mock rifle is manufactured primarily out of glass fiber, with specific details made from other materials, including plastic tubing.
