Search engine Google has resolved a religious argument which has raged for decades – are the Beatles bigger than Jesus?
John Lennon made an off-the-cuff remark in the Evening Standard more than 40 years ago saying that his popular beat combo outfit was bigger than Jesus.
He said: “I do not know what will go first, rock’n’roll or Christianity, we’re more popular than Jesus now”.
The comments sparked problems for the Beatles among US religious groups who claimed he was Satan incarnate and ordered their kids to burn and break Beatles’ records. Some people were buying them just to burn them, pushing up sales even more.
Now it looks like Lennon was right, albeit some decades ahead of his time – according to the search engine Google, in the last four weeks more computer users have typed in the search word “Beatles” than “Jesus”.
The Beatles started to get more hits for their hits during September thanks to the re-release of all of their albums digitally-remastered.
There was also the release of the video game The Beatles Rock Band.
