Apple TV gets console-style gaming with iOS 5

Firemint says its Real Racing 2 HD title for Apple’s iPad will offer a console-style gaming experience when iOS 5 goes live.

“[This] will be the first title to support full screen wireless gaming over AirPlay,” the company confirmed on its website.

“[It] isn’t just mirroring – you’ll be able to play Real Racing 2 HD on your big screen without a cable, while your iPad 2 displays racing telemetry in real-time. No black borders, no wires – just iOS racing at its finest.”

According to FireMint, Apple’s evolving AirPlay protocol should be perceived as nothing less than a genuine “game-changer.”

“It allows us to bring a never-before-seen level of freedom to Real Racing 2 HD. Combined with the precision steering and brilliant 3D visuals made possible by iPad 2′s phenomenal hardware, Real Racing 2 HD over AirPlay promises an experience you’ll have to play to believe.”

As AppleInsider’s Neil Hughes points out, AirPlay Mirroring will enable games to offer a more traditional console-like gaming experience, with the iPad 2 acting as a controller for titles being played on the big screen.

“[For example], an Apple TV-connected HDTV and the iPad 2 display will be utilized by Real Racing 2, offering dual-screen gaming over AirPlay. It’s a gameplay experience not unlike Nintendo’s Wii U, announced at [E3 in Los Angeles] this week,” he explained.

“[Remember], the highlight of Nintendo’s next-gen console is its controller, which features a 6-inch resistive single-touch screen that has drawn comparisons to Apple’s iPad. But Nintendo’s touchscreen will be driven by the power of the Wii U gaming console it wirelessly connects to, while the iPad is a standalone device.”
