Tomb Raider Reboot is a Success

Last year, Tomb Raider got rebooted with a whole new hi-def look, and there was a question as to whether today’s gamers would cotton to an older franchise. Well, apparently they have, because the game has sold six million copies.

As Gamespot tells us, the game got off to a slow start a year ago when it came out last March, but now as Square Enix said in a statement, “By the end of this month we will surpass 6 million units for Tomb Raider, and having achieved profitability back in 2013, Tomb Raider has exceeded profit expectations and continues to make significant contributions to our overall financial performance.”

3.4 million of the sales came from when Tomb Raider first launched, and it looks like the game has legs, because as we’ve seen with Call of Duty and GTA, the biggest sales for a game usually come in the first week.

There will of course be a sequel, Square Enix promised it’s “well into development,” and that the company “can’t wait to continue our adventures with Lara in the sequel…We are also looking forward to building on the success and lessons learned from the reboot to continue redefining and setting new benchmarks for Tomb Raider in the years to come.”
