While SHIELD has had some struggles in the ratings, it’s now heading into the new year with a character from the Thor universe making a cameo, Lady Sif.
Sif is played by Jaimie Alexander, and as Collider informs us, she will be appearing on the show on March 11. As SHIELD producer Jed Whedon, brother of Joss, told Collider, “We always have our radar up for ways to tie our series into the Marvel films and brining in an Asgardian really cements that connection. Lady Sif comes here on a hunting mission – sent by Odin – to find her arch-enemy Lorelei and bring her back to Asgard. It throws our agents for aloop when they find themselves in a fight right alongside this powerful woman from Thor’s world.”
SHIELD has been struggling in the ratings, and there’s hope that some Thor crossover will help. The Marvel/Avengers universe has many characters that will go in and out of each other’s movies and shows. Yet Vanity Fair wondered, “Is a juicy Thor cameo enough to save SHIELD?”
As writer Joanna Robinson speculates, “SHIELD has been suffering from an identity crisis from the start. It’s too big in scope and ambition for a network TV show, and as a result, often comes off like a TV show trying too hard to be a movie.”
We figured that a superhero story on TV could do more with the story than a movie series could because it has a longer story arc to work with. We’ll see how SHIELD does in the new year, but it’s also important to remember that it can take a while for a series to find its feet, it just depends on how long an audience wants to wait for it to come together.
