So JJ Abrams is finally talking a little bit about Star Wars because it’s getting closer to the start date, which will reportedly be in May. Abrams confirmed the screenplay is finished, and official casting decisions should hit the news soon.
We just saw how crazy Tarantino went when his new screenplay, The Hateful Eight, got leaked, and it’s naïve to think any big screenplay won’t get leaked in this day and age. You know that Star Wars will have top secrecy, and as Abrams told the Daily Telegraph, things have gotten pretty ridiculous, even for him.
When working on the Star Wars script, “the people in my office have covered up all my windows with black paper. I guess they wanted to make sure no one could see what I was doing. It seems rather extreme.”
Abrams is well aware that the fans have been incredibly supportive towards the Star Wars franchise, even during the dreadful Lucas prequels, so he’s hoping for “some sort of compromise” between complete secrecy, and letting the fans in, with Abrams admitting the Star Wars universe has “always been a more open, fan-engaged universe than I’ve been used to.”
Like the rest of us who grew up with Star Wars, Abrams remembers what it was like to wait forever for the next movie to come out, much like waiting for your favorite band to come into town on tour. “It’s nice to remember that there’s nothing wrong with a sense of anticipation.”
