Star Wars Comics Are Headed Back to Marvel

In addition to the new Star Wars movies that will be coming later in the decade, the Star Wars universe will also continue through spin off films, novels, comics, and video games.

If you were around when the first Star Wars movie came out back in the ‘70’s, or are just plain nuts about the franchise, you’ll know that Marvel did a Star Wars comic series back in the day, and the debut issue is valuable today. (The first issue came out several months before the movie, and it was a big seller.)

Now Marvel is back doing Star Wars comics, and it makes sense because they’re also under the Disney umbrella. As the Hollywood Reporter tells us, Marvel will launch a new Star Wars comic series in 2015, and this will be the first time in twenty years that Dark Horse won’t be doing the Star Wars comics.

In fact, Dark Horse will be releasing an adaptation of George Lucas’s original Star Wars script, which will give people a look at what the movie would have looked like before it went through considerable changes. As the Reporter tells us, Dark Horse said in a statement that they were “sad to report that Disney, the new owner of Lucasiflm, has notified us of their intention to move the Star Wars publishing license to another of their recent acquisitions, Marvel Comics…

“Dark Horse revolutionized the treatment of comics based on film,” the statement continued. “Our goal was to create sequels and prequels to the films we loved, paying careful attention to quality and detail, essentially treating those films as though they were our own. Star Wars has been the crown jewel of this approach.”

On the other hand, Marvel said in a statement that the company “could not be more excited to continue the publication of Star Wars comic books and graphic novels. There perennial brand of Star Wars is one of the most iconic in entertainment history, and we are honored to have the opportunity to bring our creative talent pool to continue and expand Star Wars into galaxies far, far away.”
