We’re big fans of the Bill and Ted movies here at TG, are quite excited by the news that a third movie is in the works.
Both Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves are ready to come back, and we’re indeed hoping it can all come together one of these days before Reeves and Winters are too old to play dudes convincingly.
Winter talked a bit about Bill and Ted while he was at the South By Southwest (SXSW) film festival, where he was promoting his upcoming documentary about Napster, Napster Downloaded. First of all, Winter told MTV that the new Bill and Ted will not be a “weird reboot.”
As far as the film’s progress, Winters addressed rumors that there were legal problems holding the film up.
“There’s no drama,” he said. “There’s no legal skirmish. There’s no nothing. There’s me, Keanu, [screenwriters] Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon, the original core.” Solomon also wrote Men in Black and is currently penning the remake of the sci-fi classic Colossus with Will Smith slated to star. Also onboard to direct the next Bill and Ted is Dean Parisot, who helmed Galaxy Quest.
Winter continued, “We built a story. They wrote a script. We’re tinkering with the script to get it perfect. Then we will go get the money and we will shoot it. That’s really all there is to it.” And again, thankfully Winter and the gang aren’t wiping the slate clean and starting all over again from the beginning.
“We are not discounting where we come from,” Winter explained. “The thing that we’re working on is absolutely a Bill and Ted movie. It’s not forgetting the past.”
So this is definitely exciting news, and we do indeed hope another Bill and Ted will finally reach the finish line.
Along with Jeff Spicoli, Bill and Ted were two of the funniest dudes in comedy, and we eagerly await their return. And if today’s generation doesn’t know about Bill and Ted, or are too lazy to do a refresher course on them, screw ‘em. We old ‘80’s fogeys will welcome the new movie and enjoy it all the same.
