With the incredible success of The Avengers, Joss Whedon’s finally has an enormous hit at the box office, and he greatly helped improve Disney’s bottom line after the John Carter disaster.
After somewhat of a suspenseful wait, Disney did finally confirm that Whedon will be back for the next Avengers film, which is slated to hit theaters on May 1, 2015.
A second Avengers film is part of an exclusive deal Whedon signed with Marvel that also includes a TV show, was recently confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter as none other than S.H.I.E.L.D.
This will be a Whedon family affair with Joss writing, along with his brother Jed and wife Maurissa Tancharoen, who also collaborated on Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along.
Marvel fans will need no introduction to S.H.I.E.L.D., but for those who are superhero impaired, S.H.I.E.L.D. was created by comics legend Jack Kirby, whose other legendary creations include Captain America, The Hulk, The Silver Surfer, and many others. S.H.I.E.L.D. is actually an acronym for Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistic Directorate. (Try saying that five times fast).
Whedon is likely to direct the pilot, and as the Reporter points out, Whedon originally fled to TV because he couldn’t get any of his movie scripts made – transforming TV into a great place for writers with the success of Buffy. But his most recent TV show, Dollhouse, starring Eliza Dushku was a flop, and of course every geek knows the epic struggles Whedon’s had with the cult-classic Firefly series.
Now that Whedon’s tasted mega-success with The Avengers, his foundation should stay pretty strong for years, and we’ll see if any of that incredible Avengers luck rubs off on the S.H.I.E.L.D. series as well. No word yet on a potential debut date for the show, but as soon as find out, we’ll let you know ASAP.
