Sony’s Xperia S is a Tegra 3-powered Android tablet

Sony may have debuted a number of Windows 8 tablets earlier today, but the Japanese-based corporation has absolutely no intention of neglecting its Android fan base.

Indeed, the Xperia Tablet S is joining Sony’s smartphones under the Xperia sub-brand, with the intention of providing a “consistent experience” between Xperia-branded devices.

The Xperia S runs Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and is powered by an Nvidia Tegra 3 processor. Additional key specs include a full-sized SD card slot for expanded storage, HDMI connectivity with optional HDMI adapter cable, WiFi and ClearAudio+ mode.

According to Sony Electronics exec Phil Lubell, the Xperia Tablet S builds on the popularity of the universal remote control feature found supported by the previous iteration of the device.

“The Xperia Tablet S enhances this by adding macro functionality, allowing the ability to turn on multiple devices of most brands, including TV, Blu-ray Disc player and audio system, with the touch of one button,” Lubell explained.

“[Users] can easily program sequenced commands such as ‘Watch TV’ or ‘Play Music’ and perform the sequences with one tap on the screen.”

Lubell also noted that Sony is offering a new app dubbed Watch Now, which provides an interactive, visual program guide populated by personal preferences and real-time trends from social media feeds.

“TV fans can use the app to discover new shows based on intelligent recommendations from the app, change the channel with a flick of the finger and share their thoughts on what they are watching via Twitter, Facebook and Get Glue,” he added.

The Sony exclusive app will be available for download for the Xperia Tablet S in the US from Google Play at launch.

The Xperia Tablet S is available in 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB versions for $399, $499 and $599 starting September 7. Preorders kick off today.

Additional Tablet S accessories include a cover with keyboard, dock speaker, charging cradle, carrying cover, and a docking stand equipped with three USB ports and one HDMI port.
