In this week’s music news, major festivals seem to be taking a turn to the new, with Coachella venturing out to sea and All Tomorrow’s Parties I’ll Be Your Mirror Festival moving from New Jersey to New York.
Coming this December, the S.S. Coachella Festival is the new addition to the Coachella Festival powerhouse. The festival on water will consist of two trips, with one traveling to the Bahamas from December 16th to the 19th, and the other to Jamaica from December 19th to the 23rd.
The cruise ships are slated to depart from Fort Lauderdale, Florida and will showcase a number of popular artists such as Pulp, Hot Chip, Girl Talk, Yeasayer, Sleigh Bells, James Murphy and more. Although festival cruises have become a trend in the festival circuit, Coachella concert promoters only agreed to set sail with the festival after finding a 122,000-ton ship capable of holding 2800 fans. Ticket prices for the
voyage start at a cool $500 per person, with 11 other price levels available for grabs.
The All Tomorrow’s Parties I’ll Be Your Mirror festival was set to rock the grounds of Astbury Park, New Jersey from September 21st through the 23rd, but it was recently announced that the fest would be moving to Pier 36 in Manhattan, New York. Pier 36 is a new indoor venue situated between Manhattan and Williamsburg Bridges.
It was planned to become the festival’s new location in 2012, but All Tomorrow’s Parties decided to move a year early due to “unavoidable logistical concerns,” with the former location proving to be a hard site in which to accommodate the amount of fans in attendance. The festival is offering full refunds until July 31st of this year. In light of the location switch, Louis CK, Sharon Van Etten, Reigning Sound and Factory Floor have cancelled their performances due to conflicting schedules.
Coheed and Cambria member Claudio Sanchez is working on a nice collaboration that is, oddly enough, not of the musical variety. His company Evil Ink Comics recently announced at Comic-Con International that they’ve partnered with Stephen Levinson’s Leverage Productions to translate a sci-fi graphic novel to a live action feature film, titled The Armory Wars. The premise of The Armory Wars is set in an alternative, futuristic universe and tells the story of a superhuman dictator named Wilhelm Ryan. Sanchez made The Armory Wars with the intention to help inspire Coheed and Cambria albums.
On September 8th, MusicfestNW will take over the Roseland Theater in Portland, Oregon, featuring a slew of acts like Dinosaur Jr., Sedadoh and J Mascis. The featured lineup is part of Red Bull’s Common Thread, a groundbreaking new series of shows that concentrate around various gatherings of music groups with shared band members. Red Bull Common Thread aims to unite the varying sounds of band members who work independently on solo projects. MusicfestNW will commence with Dinosaur Jr. and associated acts J Mascis and Sebadoh, all separate-but-related music groups.
On August 11th, the 3rd annual Power of the Riff West will be swinging by Los Angeles. Since the lineup was released, more bands have signed on to perform, including OFF! And SUNN 0))). This year’s event is designed to “honor extreme music fans and musicians of all ages,” featuring a lineup consisting of local acts as well as current touring acts. Tickets and the full 2012 lineup are available on the festival’s website.
