Sony will be unveiling something new in its mobile division next week.
The company sent out invitations for an event on May 2. The invitation teases that attendees will “find out what’s new and next with Xperia gaming.”
Sony’s Xperia brand has become very strong in the mobile community, but it isn’t the strongest. Other manufacturers like HTC and Samsung have gained far more attention.
Sony hoped it could change that by offering something completely bold and different, which is why it launched the Xperia Play, a device that looked more like a handheld gaming system than a phone.
Sadly, it was a real flop. But it’s hard to tell if that’s because people didn’t want a dedicated gaming phone like that, or if the phone’s technical specs were just too modest to give it credibility as a gaming phone.
At the event will be not only Sony, but also competitive gaming organization Major League Gaming and leading mobile gaming publisher Gameloft.
The invitation features a picture of the Xperia Play, an interesting decision given the lackluster performance of the device. Hopefully Sony will show that it learned from its mistakes and will show gamers why Sony is the best choice for mobile gaming.
It is worth noting that the Xperia Play was launched by Sony Ericsson. Now, however, the “Ericsson” part is gone, which means it is much easier for Sony to pull resources from its other divisions, like the Playstation division.
TG Daily will be at next week’s event and will provide a hands-on report of whatever the company shows off.
