Neill Blomkamp made a big splash with District 9, and while Elysium wasn’t a winner, we think he could have a comeback with Chappie, which looks like it could be a modern version of Short Circuit. (And we mean that in a good way.)
Recently, some sketches inspired by Alien have been making the rounds on the net, raising speculation that Blomkamp would direct a resurrection of the famed sci-fi classic. After all, everything else is being rebooted these days, and you figure it’s time they’ll get around to resurrecting Alien again.
Blomkamp explained to Uproxx and Slash Film, “When Chappie got heavily into post-production, I could take my foot off the gas a bit. I was thinking about what I wanted to do next and I’ve been wanting to make an Alien film for like years and years.”
Working with Sigourney Weaver on Chappie, “she set off a bunch of thoughts in my head…I spent all of the shooting time with her, it was like, holy shit, that could actually be really interesting…I basically developed an entire movie and I did all of this artwork as well.”
And indeed, Blomkamp’s art for the film, which he released to Instagram, is pretty awesome stuff. We’re not sure how it could all fit into a story, but that’s what we love about watching a trailer where you see something pretty insane, and wonder how that would work out in a movie, much like the first Alien. (Before the movie came out, I remembered thinking, What’s that big egg doing on the poster?)
