When the first Avatar movie came out in theaters on its designated release date, a lot of people were surprised. James Cameron’s been notoriously late on many of his movies, including Titanic, which was supposed to come out in the summer of 1997, but finally got released on the same date as Avatar, December 19.
So if you’re looking forward to the sequels to Avatar, you’re now going to have to wait an extra year, because Variety reports they’ve been pushed back a year. Cameron is planning a trilogy of follow-ups, one will come out every year, except now it will begin in 2017.
Variety tells us Cameron still hasn’t delivered a shooting script to Fox, which means they can’t put together a budget or a production schedule. (Just put this down for the budget: HUGE.) Cameron will also shoot all the sequels simultaneously.
When it comes to my favorite filmmakers and bands, my attitude used to be I didn’t care how long I had to wait for their next work, as long as it was worth the wait. As an unabashed Avatar fan, I’ll be more than willing to wait another year, provided it delivers, and I have the feeling it will.
