Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for its upcoming sci-fi mech-fighter flick.
In Pacific Rim, the world is under attack from Kaiju, gigantic creatures from another dimension who cannot be reasoned with, and wish only our destruction. Humans build bipedal mechanized infantry, called Jaegers. The war with the creatures has been raging for years when a pair of predictably unlikely heroes must save the day using a Jaeger from the start of the war, which everyone thought would be useless. It’s a classic underdog tale with some buddy flick – the Jaegers must be piloted by two people who are in synch with one another – and monster movie elements.
Of course the focus here isn’t really the plot. It’s about the effects. The production values are outstanding, and we finally get to see what they look like in this trailer:
Seeing that the two pilots are opposite gender is actually a bit disappointing, as it means that there will likely be a bunch of clichéd sexual tension and maybe even some goofball romance, when really we just want to see more robot/monster fights. This year has shown us all that it’s not absolutely necessary to include a romantic subplot in every single action film produced. Maybe the lesson will actually sink into Hollywood after a few years.
Of course, I could be wrong. The trailer doesn’t actually hint at any romance between the characters, maybe they are just good friends…
The official synopsis is as follows:
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes — a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) — who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
We’ve also got some new promo images that give us a better look at the films visuals, and even some of its style:
