Universal Pictures has this week released a new featurette for its upcoming action filled fairytale adaptation, Snow White and the Huntsman.
This video details one of the more interesting characters, the spirit of the mirror.
The oldest versions of the Snow White tale don’t really go into much detail as to what the mirror’s magic was like, or how it was represented in the world of the story, leaving each adaptation of the classic fairy tale to do something a little bit different.
Personally, I really liked the depiction in Mirror, Mirror, the Relativity Media adaptation which came out earlier this year, as a sort of alternate dimension, where the queen would find a small hut, filled with mirrors reflecting a sinister version of herself.
This version isn’t quite that cool, but does look a bit more sinister, which is likely the feeling the studio was going for. A poorly polished brass mirror, which oozes its way out into the room, and crosses its arms before you seems sort of Djinish, very Arabian Nights. The bronze-draped form stands there with a palpable attitude, much less acquiescent than most depictions of the cognizant mirror.

The official synopsis of Snow White and the Huntsman is thus:

Sam Claflin (“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides”) joins the cast as the prince long enchanted by Snow White’s beauty and power.
