After disagreements with how the company should change moving forward, Acer’s top man has decided to leave.
CEO Gianfranco Lanci faced increasing pressure after board members said the firm needed to alter its strategy to become profitable. After he continued to butt heats with those board members, it seemed like there was no other option.
Acer recently reported its quarterly earnings, and the results were significantly worse than expected. There’s no doubt drastic changes need to be made.
Chairmain JT Wang will take over the day-to-day responsibilities of Acer CEO. In a statement, Wang said, “The personal computer remains the core of our business. In addition, we are stepping into the new mobile device market, where we will invest cautiously and aim to become one of the leading players.”
Acer has tried to remain relevant by being a strong player in the netbook market, and has started to dabble in the tablet market. But most of its products are low-end and don’t yield a very high margin.
While the company didn’t say exactly what issues caused the divide between Lanci and the board, it seems Wang is confident he’ll be able to turn the ship around.
