Toshiba has shown off a new glasses-free 3D display for tablet devices, but hasn’t yet announced an actual device that will use it.
The company is displaying the flagship display module, which measures in at eight inches, at an event this week.
Engadget found the display and reportedly heard from Toshiba that it “made sense” for the company to invest in glasses-free 3D tech for the tablet market.
Toshiba is not the first company to show off glasses-free 3D tablet technology. Sprint will be launching such a tablet later this year.
LG also released the T-Mobile G-Slate last month, which has a 3D camera but only presents 3D content in anaglyphic (i.e., the kind that requires those red and blue glasses) form.
Make no mistake, though – Toshiba is an innovator in the glasses-free 3D market. It was the first to launch a TV using the technology, though so far it has only released it in Japan. The company does plan to further expand that product line and will bring it to the US once the price comes down and the screen size increases.
Toshiba was one of the biggest manufacturers to avoid the glasses-required 3D craze last year, so we have no doubt it will continue to innovate in this arena.
For now, though a Toshiba-branded glasses-free 3D tablet just remains in the early development stage.
