It’s the look and feel of the 1980s with all the horse power of the 2010s.
That’s right, the C64x, a fully modern computer housed in a vintage style Commodore 64 casing, is now available for sale.
The company that owns the rights to the historical Commodore brand and content first teased the deceptively old-looking computer last year, promising it would be available for the holiday season. But for undisclosed reasons, it had to push that back. Until now.
The computers are powered by an Intel Atom processor, and are available with a variety of specs. The cheapest model is $250, but that just gets you a basic computing experience. You can spend up to $900 for the top-of-the-line model, which comes with 4 GB of RAM, a Blu-ray drive and a 1 TB hard drive. That’s a lot of words that didn’t exist or no one knew about back when the Commodore 64 was first introduced.
Aside from the technical specs, the C64x computer comes with a fully functional C64 emulator. We wouldn’t expect anything less. There are also some vintage games pre-installed to the hard drive.
Commodore USA notes that the C64x is powered by “Commodore OS,” instead of Windows. Surely that doesn’t mean the same software that powered the original Commodore devices, so it must be some sort of optimized 21st century take on the old OS.
Regardless, it is most certainly a novelty gadget and shouldn’t be expected to replace a perfectly fine modern-day computer configuration. But hell, it still looks really cool.
