It’s that time of year, folks. Everyone’s looking back at what happened over the last 11 months as we round out the end of 2010, and there’s no better way to see what made news this year than to look at the most searched terms on Google.
The search giant has released its list of most popular searches in 2010, and some of them might surprise you. Some of them you have probably never even heard of before.
Unlike in previous years, the list was dominated by mobile and social networking topics. In the past, it was usually heavily packed with celebrity names and current event items. This year, it was as follows:
1. iPad
2. Chatroulette
3. iPhone 4
4. World Cup
5. Justin Bieber
6. Myxer
7. Facebook
8. Grooveshark
9. Glee
10. Mocospace
The World Cup, Justin Bieber, Facebook, iPad/iPhone…those all go without saying. But what are those other searches? Well, Chatroulette is a website that lets webcam-connected users randomly meet other users via video chat. Myxer is a site that offers free MP3s and desktop wallpapers, and Grooveshark is an Internet radio site. Mocospace, meanwhile, is a social networking service for mobile users.
This year was the year of Android when it comes to mobile news, and it would be interesting to see how much of Google’s overall traffic for the year came from Android phones.
Nevertheless, either the general public is getting more in tune with technology, or the non-tech-heads aren’t using Google anymore. I’d say it’s the former.
