Lockheed Martin and Animetrics are using interactive 3D modeling to recreate a subject’s entire face.
The new technology will allow law enforcement officials to more easily identify suspects by comparing detailed rendered images to existing 2D mug shots and traditional file photos.
“[We are working] on a facial image comparison tool to be used by human operators as they narrow down the results delivered by automated facial-recognition tools,” explained Lockheed VP Bob Eastman.
“The objective of this program is to develop a software product that may be validated for use in case work.”
Eastman added that the the program represented an “important step” in advancing biometric and facial-recognition technology.
“[Of course], in the future, we hope to develop technologies that will not only model existing pictures in 3-D, but also collect images in 3-D.”
