The arduous process of rolling out the new Android operating system to all compatible phones is taking another step forward. HTC’s Droid Incredible is now beginning to offer users the updated platform.
Otherwise known by Google’s trendy “Froyo” codename, the new OS takes up 93.7 MB and adds support for the latest version of Adobe Flash, as well as an increase to overall performance.
The biggest new feature is the ability to turn your phone into a portable Wi-Fi hotspot, creating a virtual access point that you can then connect to with a laptop or any other Wi-Fi device.
The update process to Android 2.2 has kind of become a way to feature every single one of the compatible devices, with only one phone getting the update at a time. It will be several months before every phone that is eligible for the update actually receives it.
Google’s own Nexus One handset was the first to get 2.2 earlier this summer, while HTC’s Evo 4G and Motorola’s Droid have received the update within the last month. The Droid 2 comes with Android 2.2 pre-installed.
Still awaiting their turn at the update are the Droid X and all of Samsung’s Galaxy S phones. AT&T is the only mobile provider still without any Android 2.2 devices.
Those with a Droid Incredible can go to the phone’s settings menu to trigger the update. Only some users will have it immediately available while Verizon works to get it pushed out to all Incredible owners over the next few days.
