Sony refreshes Playstation 3 lineup

Sony will be introducing two new Playstation 3 models in Fall 2010.

The 320GB PS3 system is slated to be included with the Sports Champions Move bundle, while the 160GB version will be sold as a standalone unit.

“The 160GB PS3 brings you more storage for the same price as the previous model – $299.99 (MSRP) – and is shipping to retailers nationwide now,” Sony hardware guru John Koller explained in an official blog post.

“The 320GB PS3 system will hit store shelves on September 19, in conjunction with the launch of PlayStation Move.

“It will be part of the PS3 Sports Champions Move bundle, which includes one PlayStation Move motion controller, PlayStation Eye camera, a copy of Sports Champions on Blu-ray disc, and bonus Blu-ray game demo disc – all in one complete package for $399.99.”

According to Kris Graft of Gamasutra, Sony’s hard drive “beef-up” is typical procedure for the electronics giant.

“Sony [routinely] opts to add or change features to its hardware to make it more appealing to consumers, rather than conduct frequent price cuts,” explained Graft.

“[And] the larger hard drives will help accommodate more digital downloads from PlayStation Network, such as games, videos and add-on gaming content.”

Sony’s current lineup of PS3s are available in 120GB and 250GB iterations for $300 and $350.

Meanwhile, Microsoft’s 250GB Xbox 360 is sold at a $300 price point.
