DirecTV has become the first TV service provider to offer an entire suite of dedicated 3D channels, while the sweeping majority of other cable and satellite providers still have absolutely no 3D content available.
Available today on the DirecTV channel listing are DirecTV Cinema in 3D, N3D, and N3D On Demand.
N3D is the focal point of the new 3D package. That will be the first channel in the US to offer original programming specifically tailored for a 3D TV presentation. Exclusive shows made for the DirecTV channel include Dinosaurs: Giants of Patagonia, Wild Safari: A South African Adventure and N Wave Picture’s S.O.S Planet, African Adventure: Safari in the Okavango, and Encounter in the Third Dimension.
The channel will also offer 3D sports coverage for content that isn’t covered by ESPN 3D, like the upcoming Nascar Coke 400 race and national broadcasts of Major League Baseball games.
DirecTV Cinema in 3D is the first 3D movie channel, although currently it is only playing two titles: the Imax features Deep Sea 3D and Under the Sea 3D.
N3D On Demand will offer on-demand 3D programming including content from the N3D channel as well as DirecTV’s other 3D networks.
The new channels are sponsored by Panasonic, the second-place competitor for 3D TV market dominance and a huge financial supporter for DirecTV’s 3D initiative.
“Our innovative technology has allowed us to lead the industry in HD and we are continuing on that same path by establishing ourselves as the premier destination for the best 3D viewing experience available. We are proud to be partnering with Panasonic and are excited to deliver this new dimension of television to millions of DirecTV HD customers across the country,” said DirecTV Executive VP Derek Chang.
