Is that an Android-powered smartphone in your pocket? No? Well then, what are you waiting for? Join the friggin’ club!
Indeed, at least 65,000 Android-based phones are currently being shipped on a daily basis, with Android crowned the OS of choice on 34 mobile devices in 94 countries.
“Our strategy is very different from everybody else’s. We license our code for free, so that’s really pretty revolutionary,” Google CEO Eric Schmidt told an investor meeting.
“We’re trying to build an entire ecosystem of openness, the inverse of the other guys.”
It should be noted that Google’s Android recently trounced Apple’s iPhone OS by capturing the coveted number-two position among smartphone operating systems in a survey conducted by the NPD Group.
Unsurprisingly, Apple has disputed the veracity of the study.
“This is a very limited report on 150,000 US consumers responding to an online survey and does not account for the more than 85 million iPhone and iPod touch customers worldwide,” claimed Apple spokeswoman Natalie Harrison.
According to Harrison, the NPD data failed to provide a “complete picture,” as the iPhone “far outsells” Android on a worldwide basis.
“We had a record quarter with iPhone sales growing by 131 percent and with our new iPhone OS 4.0 software coming this summer, we see no signs of the competition catching up any time soon.”
