Xbox 360 users have been enjoying new content on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 for a few weeks now, and owners of the PS3 and PC versions will soon be able to get their hands on the update as well.
Over 2 million people have already downloaded the “Stimulus Package” update for the Xbox 360 version of Modern Warfare 2, a $15 expansion to the game that adds new maps and other features to the top-selling $60 game.
There was a bit of a glitch when the update was first rolled out, because Microsoft pushed it to the online Xbox Live Marketplace store before they released a patch to game that allowed the update to work. The result was that hundreds of gamers were locked out of their game for one day.
That problem is unlikely to occur when the update comes to the PS3 and PC, which has just been announced to come out May 4.
Microsoft paid the game’s publisher, Activision, an undisclosed sum of money to make the update available only to the Xbox 360 for the first few months, in a growing trend for the industry called “timed exclusivity.”
It encourages multi-platform owners to buy the Xbox 360 version of the game and makes other console owners feel outdated when the update finally comes to their system.
