Microprocessor company Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has closed down for two weeks and will re-open on January 4, 2010.
The company has this luxury because it span off its semiconductor manufacturing to Global Foundries. Fabs stay open during holidays because it costs a fortune to shut them down.
This is not to say trade will stop for AMD. There are plenty of people buying and selling AMD chips between now and January 4 next. Distributors and re-sellers. And the chips will continue to be made.
It’s just that if you want to talk to the suits in AMD Sunnyvale or Austin, you’re more than likely to get a recorded message.
We contacted Intel. Although the company didn’t say that the sun never sets on the Intel empire, it still has fabs and will be open for business on Christmas Day. An Intel representative confirmed the company will be open for business.
TG Daily doesn’t have fabs, but we’ll be open for business too, right through the holidays.
