Micron, Intel develop three bit per cell NAND flash

The joint venture created by Intel and Micron said that it has developed a three bit per cell multi level NAND chip, aimed at the flash card and USB market.

IM Flash Technologies said that it will mass produce product in the fourth quarter of this year and claimed it will be the smallest and most cost effective 32 gigabit chip available, measuring 126 square millimeters.

The chips are produced on a 34 nanometer process and are already sampling to customers. Brian Shirley,VP of Micron’s memory group said the joint venture will make further NAND shrinks.

He  said: “Today’s announcement further highlights that Micron and Intel have made great strides in 34 nanometer NAND and we look forward to introducing our 2xnm technology later this year.”

Randy Wilhelm, Intel’s VP of NAND said that the announcement will lead to a development of a 2xnm process “that will help decrease costs” and increase the capabilities of the NAND memory.
