We weren’t shocked that Big Hero Six won Best Animated feature at the Academy Awards this year, even though the Lego Movie definitely got the shaft. Six is a unique superhero story – told Pixar style – that has tremendous family appeal, and the look of the film was quite extraordinary.
So we’re not surprised to learn via Variety that Big Hero 6 is #1 in video sales. Six came out for home viewing on March 1, and it immediately went to the top spot, reportedly totaling 58% of total sales from Blu-Rays. It also blew the second movie on the list, Horrible Bosses 2, out the door, selling more than 10 times more discs.
Again, we’re not surprised that this is turning into a family favorite, and it should continue to be for years to come, but we’re a bit stunned at just how well it’s been doing. Disney has many great family films, and now Deadline tells us that Hero 6 is the company’s third biggest animated title, making over $600 million world-wide.
While the Big Hero 6 creators have said they’re not thinking about a sequel at the moment, putting a movie together is a pretty tough thing to do and they were trying to have some rest, but we wouldn’t be surprised if another installment of Hero 6 is announced soon. Considering this is an origin story, the door’s wide open for many more great movies to come.
