It’s the one Marvel comic adaptation everyone’s been waiting for, and now it’s officially a go: Doctor Strange will begin filming next year for a projected July 8, 2016.
The front-runner to play Strange is Joaquin Phoenix, but it still hasn’t been confirmed whether he’s officially in the role or not. According to First Showing and Screen Daily, Marvel’s trying to coordinate the shooting schedule with Pinewood-Shepperton Studios in England, where they hope to shoot Doctor Strange next May, because they don’t want to clash with the currently shooting Star Wars: Episode VII.
Now you’ve just read our report that the new Batman origin story, Gotham, got good early reviews, and it should do at least as well as SHIELD, if not better. (Getting back to Doctor Strange for a moment, the Doc’s story reportedly won’t be an origin tale, apparently he’ll already have his powers from the get-go.) Arrow is another Fall superhero contender on CW, and in what the Hollywood Reporter has called a low buzz season, the big boys this season should be superheroes for sure, especially in the wake of Guardians of the Galaxy.
While DC hasn’t caught up with Marvel at the movies, they’re definitely pushing as hard as they can on TV with Arrow and Gotham, but next year we also have the Marvel series like Daredevil and Iron Fist on NetFlix. Along with Avengers 2, this tells us the superhero genre should reach a very nice critical mass next year.
