February is usually a dead zone for movies, so it’s not too surprising to see that the Lego film is making a lot of money right now, yet we at TGD have to admit we’re amazed at its staying power. In fact, by the time you read this, it will be the #1 movie in the country for three weeks.
Although nobody can really predict the future, we definitely have the feeling this will be the beginning of a major new franchise in animation, and we could absolutely see a Lego movie series giving Pixar a run for the money. So it’s not surprising to learn that a sequel to the Lego movie has already been announced, and it will be hitting theaters on May 26, 2017.
As the box office pundits safely predicted, the newest releases this month have been no match for Lego, and Pompeii and 3 Days to Kill both got steamrollered by the Lego train this weekend. The movie is inching closer to the $200 million mark, and we’re certain the money will keep pouring in for some time.
Warner Brothers announced the sequel on Friday, February 21, and we’re sure they had plans for another film in their back pocket for a while, they were probably just waiting for the film to hit before making the official announcement. So it’s funny to think the foundation for another major movie franchise is being built with Legos right now, but that’s exactly what’s happening, and we’re looking forward to the next installment in ’17.
